Exciting Project Developing at HDC

After months of planning, we have launched a capital campaign

"A Future of Opportunities"

to improve and enhance services to individuals served at the Center.  The campaign has two components:

  • Our Personal Independence Services program will be relocated from the main HDC building at 3402 Hickory Grove Road to 4201 Brady Street, which is the old Halftime Bar, after additions and remodeling are completed.

  • In the space vacated at the Hickory Grove Road building, two training areas will be enhanced to offer more opportunities for individuals to learn work skills and earn a paycheck.

Why This Is Needed

The HDC Personal Independence program has grown over the years and now serves 90 people with severe and/or multiple disabilities in a space built to accommodate 60 to 65.  Overcrowding, due to so many more people in the area, is complicated by the fact that many of them are physically disabled and utilize walkers or wheelchairs.  Currently, the program experiences overcrowded classrooms, people waiting to use the restroom, classrooms being used for lunches and breaks, and congested hallways.

The Plan

I.  Relocate the Personal Independence Services program to 4201 Brady Street in Davenport.  After renovations, the building will provide more space and better facilities to meet the needs of individuals served in that program.  The safer environment and improved services will include:

  • More classroom space

  • Additional and larger changing rooms

  • More physical therapy space

  • Adequately equipped break and lunch rooms

  • Wider hallways

II.  Use the space vacated at the Hickory Grove Road building to provide a better learning environment for the individuals receiving services in several departments.  Services will be improved by providing for:

  • An enhancement of the Micrographics Department

  • Classroom space for Employment Services

  • Growth in the Screenprinting Department

  • More private meeting space

  • Production Activities

Progress So Far

The total cost of the project is $4.97 million.  At this point, the "HDC Family" has pledged or contributed over $1.1 million toward the goal.  The "HDC Family" consists of the HDC Board of Directors, the HDC Booster Organization, the HANDS Auxiliary, the staff, and families of individuals receiving services.  Other major gifts include:

  • $400,000 from the Bechtel Trust

  • $400,000 from the Kresge Foundation

  • $250,000 from the John Deere Foundation

  • $160,000 from the Scott County Regional Authority

  • $100,000 from the Riverboat Development Authority

Over $4.4 million has been raised for the project thus far.  That's 90% of the goal!
